Rising Earthquakes and Bible Prophecy: Signs of the End Times by Brian Gaugler

When Jesus sat with His disciples on the Mount of Olives, they asked Him the question that’s been burning in the hearts of believers ever since: “What shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?” (Matthew 24:3).
Among His answers, one stands out boldly: “And there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.” (Matthew 24:7).
Earthquakes aren’t just natural disasters—they are prophetic signposts, warning signals on God’s timeline. And when we look at the data over the last century, the trend is undeniable.
Recent Earthquake Highlights
Massive Shake-Off in Queensland, Australia
A 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck near Kilkivan in southeastern Queensland—marking the largest onshore quake in the region in over 50 years. Around 16,000 people reported feeling it, with widespread power outages and minor damage to homes and infrastructure. Thankfully, there were no serious injuries reported. Aftershocks are expected.News.com.auThe Guardian
Myanmar’s Devastating 7.7 Quake
In March 2025, Myanmar was hit by a 7.7–7.9 magnitude earthquake—the strongest in the country since 1912. The quake caused massive destruction in Mandalay and beyond, resulting in over 5,400 fatalities and displacing thousands.Wikipedia
Mega Quake off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula
A colossal 8.8 magnitude megathrust earthquake struck near Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula in July 2025, making it one of the most powerful ever recorded. While casualties were relatively low compared to its scale, it triggered tsunami alerts across the Pacific.Wikipedia
The Numbers Don’t Lie
Here’s the breakdown of major earthquakes (magnitude 6.0 or greater) by decade:
1900s: 173
1910s: 176
1920s: 242
1930s: 291
1940s: 319
1950s: 411
1960s: 605
1970s: 739
1980s: 1,015
1990s: 1,423
2000s: 1,613
2010s: 1,586
2020s (so far, through 2025): 1,029
From just 173 earthquakes in the first decade of the 1900s to over 1,600 in the 2000s—that’s nearly a tenfold increase.
Yes, better technology has improved detection. But the sheer escalation matches what Jesus foretold: an intensifying pattern, like “birth pains” (Matthew 24:8). Just as contractions grow closer and stronger before the moment of birth, so the earth itself groans louder and more frequent as the day of His return draws near.
What This Means for Us
Jesus didn’t give us these signs to stir up fear—He gave them to wake us up. Every earthquake is a reminder that this world is temporary, fragile, and passing away. The shaking of the ground points to a greater reality: one day, everything that can be shaken will be shaken, but the Kingdom of God will remain unshaken (Hebrews 12:27–28).
The real question isn’t “When will the next big earthquake happen?” The real question is: “Am I ready for the return of Christ?”
How to Be Ready
The good news is you don’t have to face the end times in fear. Peter gave the answer plainly in Acts 2:38: “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.”
Through Jesus, the penalty of sin is remitted—canceled like a debt that’s been paid in full. Baptism buries us with Him, and the Spirit raises us into new life. Just as earthquakes remind us the ground beneath us is unstable, the Gospel reminds us there is one Rock that will never move: Jesus Christ.
The Urgency of Now
Friend, the signs are not random. The pattern is not coincidence. Jesus said it would be this way, and we are living in those very days. Earthquakes are shaking the earth, but prophecy is shaking our hearts.
The only question left is: Will you be ready when He comes?
